AUSTIN, Texas, July 30, 2024 ~ A recent study conducted by Upgraded Points has revealed the most coveted airplane seats among U.S. travelers. The study, which surveyed over 3,100 passengers nationwide, provides a comprehensive guide for passengers and offers a glimpse into the flying experience.

According to Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief at Upgraded Points, understanding what travelers want is crucial in improving air travel. The study asked participants to choose their top seat location on a Boeing 737-800 seat map and shed light on the factors that influence seat choices.

The Great Debate: Window vs. Aisle

The results of the study showed that window seats dominate 8 out of the top 10 selections, with 66.6% of passengers favoring them for the views and headrest convenience, making them ideal for sleepers. On the other hand, aisle seats were preferred by 31.7% of passengers for their freedom to move around the cabin and often more legroom. Only 1.7% of passengers chose the middle seat as their preferred option.

The Most Comfortable Seats in the Sky

Delta Air Lines was rated highest for seat comfort by 33.6% of flyers, making it the top choice among airlines. American Airlines and United Airlines tied for second place at 15.9% each. In contrast, Spirit Airlines and Sun Country Airlines received low ratings with only 0.3% of flyers naming their seats as the best.

The study also found that 45% of flyers choose specific airlines based on seat comfort or availability, highlighting how important seat quality is in influencing travelers' choices.

In-Flight Etiquette and Preferences

When it comes to restroom usage and etiquette, a full 21% of flyers reported never using the restroom on a flight while only 16% preferred seats near the restroom. In terms of etiquette, almost half (44%) of passengers found reclining seats rude, but over half (54%) believed that passengers should be allowed to take their shoes off during the flight.

Personal space concerns were also a significant factor, with more than half of those surveyed reporting that their seat neighbor often infringed on their personal space. Additionally, 23% of passengers had difficulties when flying as or with a plus-sized traveler, emphasizing the need for more inclusive seating arrangements.

Top Picks: The Most Desired Airplane Seats

Unsurprisingly, the study found that seat 1A in first class was the most desired seat among travelers. This spot offers ample legroom, easy restroom access, a window view, and the convenience of being one of the first on and off the plane.

In economy class, seats 7A and 7F were close seconds for their extra space, reduced foot traffic, and easy access to overhead bins. These seats are ideal for parents traveling with small children.

Seats 20A and 20F in the exit row were also among the top 10 choices. Despite the added responsibility in emergencies, these window seats are preferred by 41% of those surveyed due to their added legroom and fewer seat neighbors on less crowded flights.
