~ As severe storms with heavy rainfall move across the state of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to ensure the safety of communities in the potential path of flash flooding. In a statement released today, Governor Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources.
The governor urged residents in East Texas and the Coastal Bend to remain weather-aware and be mindful of flash flood risks. He emphasized the importance of taking precautions and following safety measures during severe weather events. "Today, I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate state emergency response resources to support local officials with flood response operations," said Governor Abbott.
According to the National Weather Service, multiple rounds of heavy rainfall are expected throughout the weekend, increasing the risk of flash flooding in the southern half of the state. In addition, river flooding is expected in East and Southeast Texas, with a potential threat expanding towards the Coastal Bend mid-week.

In response to Governor Abbott's directive, TDEM has activated various state emergency response resources to aid in flood response operations. These include Swiftwater Boat Squads from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1) and Game Wardens and boat squads from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Furthermore, TDEM has placed additional resources on standby to support severe weather operations as needed. These include a Tactical Marine Unit from Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Highway Patrol helicopters equipped with hoist capability.
Governor Abbott also encouraged Texans to take necessary precautions for their safety by monitoring local forecast information, preparing an emergency go-kit, and following warnings from local officials. Residents can check road conditions at DriveTexas.org and access flood tracking information at TexasFlood.org. For more tips on severe storm safety and disaster preparedness information, they can visit TexasReady.gov and tdem.texas.gov/prepare respectively.
With these measures in place, Governor Abbott assures that the State of Texas is ready to protect its citizens and communities from the potential dangers of severe storms and flash flooding. He reminds everyone to "Turn Around, Don't Drown" and stay safe during this weather event.
