~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has been granted federal approval to extend the deadline for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) applications. This extension comes in response to severe flooding that occurred over Fourth of July weekend and will provide individuals with an additional 25 days to apply for assistance.

According to Governor Abbott, "Texans who qualify for Disaster Unemployment Assistance will now have until September 29 to apply." He also expressed his hope that this extension will provide more support and resources for hardworking Texans as they work towards rebuilding their lives. The state of Texas remains committed to helping these communities heal and recover from the devastating effects of the severe weather.

Under the Presidential Disaster Declaration, workers and self-employed individuals in ten counties - Burnet, Kerr, Guadalupe, Kimble, McCulloch, Menard, San Saba, Tom Green, Travis, and Williamson - may be eligible for DUA benefits if they have been unable to work due to damage sustained from the storms and flooding. Those affected can apply for benefits online through Unemployment Benefit Services or by calling TWC at (800) 939-6631.

It is important to note that applications for DUA benefits must be submitted by September 29, 2025. This benefit is specifically designed for victims of disasters and is available to individuals who meet certain criteria. These include having exhausted all regular unemployment benefits or not qualifying for them at all; being employed or self-employed in the disaster area; being unable to work due to physical damage or destruction of their workplace; having their primary source of income affected; being unable to work due to injury caused by the disaster; becoming the main provider for a household due to the death of the head of household; or being unable to reach their job or self-employment location due to travel restrictions caused by the disaster.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) is also urging Texans to report any damage to their homes or businesses using the online Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT). These reports will help emergency officials determine eligibility for federal assistance, including DUA.

With this extended deadline, the state of Texas hopes to provide much-needed support and resources for those affected by the severe weather. The TWC and TDEM will continue to work together to assist individuals in their recovery efforts.
