~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is now accepting applications for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) in response to the recent severe storms and flooding that have affected Texas. This comes after President Donald J. Trump declared a Major Disaster Declaration for the state, making workers and self-employed individuals in Kerr County eligible for DUA benefits if they have been unable to work due to damage sustained from the severe weather.
In a statement, Governor Abbott expressed his commitment to helping those impacted by the floods, saying, "Texas continues to work around the clock to assist local officials in search and rescue and recovery operations. We are also working to ensure that Texans hit hardest by these devastating floods have the resources they need to move forward." He urged affected individuals in Kerr County to apply for DUA benefits and assured them that the state will be relentless in helping them get back on their feet.
Those who have been affected by flooding in the designated area can apply for benefits online through Unemployment Benefit Services or by calling TWC at (800) 939-6631 between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The deadline for submitting applications is September 4, 2025. It is important for applicants to specify that their applications are related to damage caused by Hill Country flooding.

Additional counties may be added to President Trump's disaster declaration as officials continue to review self-reported damage information through the Texas Division of Emergency Management's Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT) damage survey. Impacted Texans are encouraged to submit information about damage to homes or businesses through this tool when it is safe to do so. This information is crucial in identifying impacted areas and connecting Texans with resources.
DUA is an unemployment insurance benefit specifically designed for victims of disasters. It is available to individuals who have either exhausted all regular unemployment benefits or do not qualify for them, were working or self-employed in the disaster area, can no longer work due to physical damage or destruction to their place of employment, and can prove that their work or self-employment was their primary source of income. Other eligibility criteria include being unable to work due to an injury caused by the disaster, becoming the breadwinner or major support of a household due to the death of the head of household, or being unable to reach their job or self-employment location due to travel restrictions caused by the disaster.

To receive DUA benefits, all required documentation must be submitted within 21 days from the day the application is filed. This includes a Social Security number and proof of employment at the time of the disaster. Failure to provide this documentation may result in a halt in DUA payments and require recipients to repay any benefits received. TWC may use information from their system, such as wage records, to verify employment status if proof is not provided.
For a faster review process, applicants are encouraged to submit proof of employment through TWC's online UI Submission Portal. If this is not possible, they can also submit it by fax or mail. The TWC website provides more information on connecting with local Workforce Solutions offices for job search resources and training programs.
In these difficult times, Governor Abbott and TWC are committed to helping those affected by severe weather in Texas get back on their feet. Eligible individuals in Kerr County are urged to apply for DUA benefits as soon as possible and provide all necessary documentation for a smooth process.
