Governor Abbott Announces Over $4.3 Million In Grants To 14 South Texas, Coastal Bend, Harlingen Area Veteran Service Organizations

~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Fund for Veterans' Assistance (FVA) has awarded grants totaling over $4.3 million to 14 organizations in South Texas, Coastal Bend, and Harlingen areas. These grants were presented as part of the Texas Veterans Commission's Grants Across Texas presentations and will provide services to more than 2,170 area veterans and their families across 19 counties.
In a statement, Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude to the brave men and women who have served our nation and defended our freedoms. He emphasized the importance of investing in these organizations and providing support for veterans and their families when they face challenges.
The grants were presented by TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner at the Harlingen Convention Center in Harlingen. Koerner highlighted the courage and honor of veterans in the Rio Grande Valley and throughout South Texas, stating that these grants will provide much-needed support for housing, financial aid, counseling, and other services.

The FVA grant recipients include Cameron County with $300,000 for financial assistance, the City of Harlingen with $400,000 for financial assistance and $500,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes, Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Coastal Bend with $200,000 for financial assistance, CPLC Texas with $50,000 for peer support services, Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity with $300,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes, Goodwill Industries of South Texas with $125,000 for skill-based training support.
Other recipients include Hidalgo County with $300,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes and $300,000 for peer support services; Hidalgo County Community Action Agency with $150,000 for financial assistance; Nueces County with $150,000 for financial assistance and $200,000 for Veterans Treatment Court; San Patricio County with $100,000 for financial assistance; The Salvation Army - Corpus Christi with $200,000 for financial assistance; Webb County with $100,000 for transportation services and $200,000 for Veterans Treatment Court; Willacy County with $150,000 for financial assistance; and Zapata County with $200,000 for financial assistance and $400,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes.

In May, Governor Abbott announced a record-breaking $46.3 million in grants to 175 organizations across Texas. These grants are expected to provide direct services to nearly 40,000 veterans, their dependents, and surviving spouses.
Since 2009, the FVA has awarded over $359 million in grant funding through more than 1,600 grants. These grants support a wide range of services including emergency financial assistance, transportation, legal services, family support services, home modification, rental and mortgage assistance.
The TVC awards grants in five categories: General Assistance, Housing for Texas Heroes, Veterans Mental Health Grants, Veterans Treatment Courts and Veteran County Service Officers. The funding for these grants is primarily generated by the Texas Lottery's games designated for veteran support. Additionally, people can donate when registering their vehicles or when getting a hunting or fishing license.
