~ In a move to support career and technical education (CTE) training programs, Governor Greg Abbott announced today that the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded three Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants totaling $872,543 to schools in Central Texas. These grants will help the schools purchase and install equipment to train 75 students for high-demand occupations such as automotive service technicians and nurses.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of equipping students with the necessary skills to secure high-paying jobs in a state that leads the nation in growth. He stated, "These grants will provide students with valuable training and resources to launch successful careers."
TWC Chairman Joe Esparza also highlighted the benefits of this partnership between TWC and educational institutions. He stated, "When students learn on modern equipment used in hospitals and service centers, they enter the workforce with confidence and transferable, marketable skills that employers value."

The awards were presented earlier today at a ceremony attended by state and local officials as well as school staff at Austin Community College's Riverside Campus. The three JET grants include a $331,387 grant to Austin Community College to train 50 students as automotive service technicians and mechanics with an electronic vehicle specialization, a $344,985 grant to Hearne Independent School District (ISD) to train five students as registered nurses in partnership with Blinn College, and a $196,171 grant to Lometa ISD to train 20 students as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in partnership with Central Texas College.
Funded by the Texas Legislature each biennium, TWC uses JET grants to defray start-up costs for developing or expanding CTE programs at public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used specifically for training students for jobs in high-demand occupations.
While JET grant awards for the current fiscal year have yet to be announced, TWC will be publishing them in the coming months. To learn more about TWC's JET grant program, visit their website.
