~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott has appointed two new members to the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) of Texas Board of Trustees. Pete Pape, Ed.D. and Dan West will serve on the board for terms set to expire on August 31, 2031.
Pape, a resident of Leander, brings a wealth of experience to the TRS Board. He currently serves as the chief financial officer for Eanes Independent School District and is a Texas Certified Public Accountant. Pape is also a member of several professional organizations including the Texas Association of School Business Officials, Government Finance Officers Association, and the TRS Retirees Advisory Committee. He most recently served as the president of the Texas Educational Employers Benefit Cooperative. Pape holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration in Accounting from Angelo State University, as well as a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston – Clear Lake.

Joining Pape on the TRS Board is Dan West from Houston. West is an investor at SCF Partners and brings with him extensive legal knowledge as a member of the State Bar of Texas and its Oil, Gas, and Energy Resources Law Section. He also holds positions as Board Chairman for Brillante Academy and Board member for the Sam Houston Area Council of Scouting America. In addition to his legal background, West has served as a gubernatorial appointee on the Economic Incentive Oversight Board since 2022. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Harvard College, his Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, and his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. West is also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who led infantry operations in Afghanistan and in support of the NATO Libyan intervention before receiving an honorable discharge at the rank of Captain in 2013.
The TRS Board plays an important role in managing retirement and other benefits for teachers and employees of the state's public schools and institutions of higher education. With the addition of Pape and West, the board is well-equipped to continue fulfilling its duties and serving the needs of Texas educators. Their terms will expire on August 31, 2031, providing ample time for them to make a positive impact on the TRS and its members.
