~ Governor Greg Abbott has appointed seven student regents to their respective universities and the student representative to serve on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The terms for all appointments are set to expire on May 31, 2024.

Texas A&M University System has appointed Elizabeth "Annie" Valicek of Houston as a student regent. Valicek is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in agricultural business and economics at West Texas A&M University.

Texas Southern University has appointed Dylan Getwood of Port Arthur as a student regent. Getwood is currently pursuing a degree in health information management at Texas Southern University.

Texas State University System has appointed Kelvin Elgar of Beaumont as a student regent. Elgar is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Lamar University.

Texas Woman's University has appointed Jianna Covarelli of Providence Village as a student regent. Covarelli is currently pursuing both a Bachelor of Social Work with a generalist's certification and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science with an emphasis in legal studies, and plans to attend law school after graduation.

University of Houston System has appointed Mielad Ziaee of Houston as a student regent. Ziaee is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with minors in biology and medicine & society from the University of Houston.

University of North Texas System has appointed Adebola "Serah" Sulaiman of Mesquite as a student regent. Sulaiman received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Southern Methodist University and her master's degree in Spanish Language Arts and Culture from the University of Salamanca in Spain, and is now pursuing her master's degree in physician assistant studies from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.

University of Texas System has appointed John Michael Austin of Austin as its student regent. Austin received his bachelor's degree in cognitive science from Rice University and is now pursuing his Doctorate Medicine from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

The Governor also appointed Cage Sawyers, Van Alstyne resident, as the student representative to serve on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the same term set to expire on May 31, 2024. Sawyers received her Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy with minor energy technology, management, and policy from Texas Christian University and is now pursuing her Juris Doctor from Texas A&M Law School.

The Governor's appointments are expected to bring fresh perspectives to their respective universities while providing valuable insight into higher education issues across the state through their service on the Coordinating Board.
