~ Governor Greg Abbott has made a request for a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for Northeast Texas communities that were affected by severe weather, including tornadoes, earlier this month. This declaration, if approved, will provide federal assistance in the form of disaster loans to Morris County and its surrounding counties.
In a statement released today, Governor Abbott stated, "Today, I requested a disaster declaration for Texans in Morris County and the surrounding area who were impacted by severe weather and tornadoes. Approval of this declaration will provide access to low-interest loans to help Texans rebuild their homes and businesses and move forward." He also expressed his gratitude to the Texas Division of Emergency Management for working with local officials to ensure that Texans meet the eligibility requirements for financial assistance.

If the request from the State of Texas is approved, the SBA will offer low-interest loans through their disaster programs to qualifying individuals whose homes and businesses sustained damage during the severe weather incident. This includes damage caused by tornadoes, thunderstorms, and straight-line winds.
Governor Abbott's request comes after an analysis of the damage sustained in impacted communities was conducted by local, state, and federal officials. The analysis confirmed that Morris County meets the federally required thresholds for SBA assistance. Additionally, officials reviewed disaster damage details provided by Texans through self-reporting surveys using the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT).
The governor has been taking proactive measures to support local communities impacted by severe weather. These include requesting joint preliminary damage assessments from local, state, and federal partners in Northeast Texas communities as well as activating state emergency response resources ahead of severe weather and flash flood threats.
With this request for a disaster declaration from the SBA, Governor Abbott is ensuring that all available resources are being utilized to help those affected by severe weather in Northeast Texas.
