September 4, 2025 ~ Houston Launches New Program to Provide Faster and More Convenient Access to Trash Cans
In an effort to improve services for residents, Mayor John Whitmire has directed the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) to launch a new program called "Can Blitz." This program aims to provide faster and more convenient access to new or replacement trash cans for residents.
Starting on Friday, September 5, Can Blitz will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with extended hours on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will be available at three locations across the city, making it easily accessible for residents.
According to Mayor Whitmire, this program is part of his commitment to providing residents with more flexible service options. Instead of waiting for scheduled delivery, residents can now pick up their containers directly through Can Blitz. This includes exchanging damaged cans for new ones or obtaining a first-time container for a new home.
The decision to launch Can Blitz came after SWMD Director Larius Hassen identified the challenges faced by residents in obtaining new containers. "Until I appointed a new director in Solid Waste, we had no idea of the magnitude of the challenges people faced to get a new container," said Mayor Whitmire. "Director Hassen has put in operational efficiencies from top to bottom, and he is implementing the improvements I asked him to make."

The department has seen a significant increase in requests for new containers due to various factors such as new subdivisions being added and homes under construction. In just one month, approximately 1,596 new homes were added to the system, with an additional 7,080 homes expected soon.
Residents who wish to participate in Can Blitz are required to bring a copy of their water bill for address verification and their 311 Service Request (SR) number. If replacing a can, they must also bring the damaged one to receive a replacement. However, the Add-A-Can service is not eligible for pick up through this program.
SWMD Director Larius Hassen assured residents that steps are being taken to improve operations and reduce wait times for garbage containers. "As we evaluate ways to improve operations, I want residents to know that waiting weeks for a garbage container is unacceptable, and we are taking steps to resolve it," said Hassen.
For those who are unable to pick up their cans, delivery will continue through the regular 311 service request process. With Can Blitz in place, residents can now have faster and more convenient access to new or replacement trash cans, making waste management easier and more efficient for everyone in Houston.
