Rifle Exploding in Training Accident, and Accusations of Negligence From Corps Led to Severe PTSD, Anxiety and Depression
AUSTIN, Texas - Txylo -- After nearly two decades of struggling with severe PTSD, anxiety, and depression, former United States Marine Taurino Tostado has found meaningful relief through the Texas Compassionate Use Program with the help of Texas Cannabis Clinic (TCC), a statewide telemedicine practice providing medical cannabis evaluations to patients across Texas.
Tostado, 48, developed debilitating symptoms following a traumatic incident at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. While serving as a range coach, the M16 rifle of a recruit under his supervision exploded without warning, sending smoke and metal fragments into the air. Though neither Marine suffered serious physical injuries, the psychological impact was immediate and long-lasting. The aftermath, and accusations that he was at fault, became the catalyst for years of emotional distress.

"I started drinking heavily, and pulled away from everything, which evolved into total emotional numbness," said Tostado. "And the antidepressants the doctor prescribed had awful side effects they never tell you about. I wanted to kill myself. I lost my marriage, almost lost my job, and was ready to give up until I found relief through Texas Cannabis Clinic."
For Tostado, who had never used cannabis and was raised hearing it was dangerous, considering medical cannabis was not an easy step. But after exhausting other options, he sought a telehealth appointment through TCC and received a state-approved prescription.
"I started microdosing throughout the day and it has helped me so much with the PTSD, anxiety and depression," he said. "I've stopped drinking and I feel so much calmer at work and at home. I'm able to hold conversations with people, sleep better and don't feel like I'm always in survival mode."
Subsequent investigation revealed that faulty ammunition caused the rifle malfunction, though Tostado has not received an official apology. The damaged rifle remains on display in the Armory at Camp Pendleton, a reminder of an incident that changed the trajectory of his life.

Today, Tostado hopes his story encourages others in similar situations to explore legal medical cannabis under Texas law. He especially urges those who feel stuck or unsupported in their current treatment plans to seek help.
Texas Cannabis Clinic physicians regularly evaluate and treat qualifying patients for symptoms related to PTSD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other chronic conditions through the Texas Compassionate Use Program.
