WASHINGTON, April 18, 2025 ~ NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers are gearing up for a spacewalk on Thursday, May 1 to complete upgrades on the International Space Station. This will be the 93rd spacewalk conducted by U.S. astronauts on the station.

To preview this upcoming mission, NASA will hold a news conference on Thursday, April 24 at 2 p.m. EDT. The conference will be broadcasted live on NASA's website from the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Viewers can also tune in through various social media platforms.

The spacewalk is expected to last approximately six and a half hours and will involve retrieving batteries and adapter plates from an external pallet to upgrade the station's power storage capacity. Bill Spetch, operations integration manager for the International Space Station Program, and Diana Trujillo, spacewalk flight director at NASA Johnson, will be participating in the news conference.

Media outlets interested in attending or participating via phone must contact the Johnson newsroom by 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23. Questions can also be submitted through social media using #AskNASA.

During the spacewalk, McClain and Ayers will relocate a communications antennae and install a mounting bracket in preparation for the installation of additional solar arrays known as IROSA (International Space Station Rollout Solar Arrays). These arrays are expected to increase power generation capability by up to 30%, providing a total of 215 kilowatts of power for the station. The installation of these arrays will take place during a future spacewalk after they arrive on a SpaceX Dragon commercial resupply mission later this year.

McClain will serve as spacewalk crew member 1 and will wear a suit with red stripes while Ayers will serve as spacewalk crew member 2 wearing an unmarked suit. This will be McClain's third spacewalk and Ayers' first. U.S. spacewalk 93 marks the 275th spacewalk in support of the assembly, maintenance, and upgrades of the International Space Station.
