SAN ANTONIO (September 16, 2021) — Today, City Council adopted the Fiscal Year 2022 Operating & Capital Budget. In response, Councilman Pelaez issues the following statement highlighting several key budget items:

"I am in full support of the City's FY 2022 Budget which includes substantial investments in public safety, domestic violence prevention, emergency preparedness and resiliency, and the essential infrastructure, road, and drainage improvements that neighbors ask us for each budget cycle.

The COVID-19 pandemic and consequent economic downturn may have dealt us a raw deal in FY 2021, but this budget reverses all cuts to infrastructure and staffing, bringing us back to a pre-pandemic level of service and helping to prepare for our future growth.

In District 8, I secured $8.4 million in street maintenance, $850,870 for sidewalks, and $10 million in neighborhood drainage projects to improve the infrastructure of our neighborhoods.

On the public safety front, 15 new officers, of which 12 are SAFFE Officers and 3 are Downtown Bike Patrol, will be added to bolster the safety of our neighborhoods. Four million dollars will be dedicated to a coordinated response to address domestic violence and mental health by deploying crisis response advocates and family systems support case managers, along with police and firefighters, to related 9-1-1 calls.

At my request, we're also investing in our future resiliency by conducting a study to identify our infrastructure weaknesses and investigate our capacity to respond to emergencies such as Winter Storm Uri, which wreaked havoc on all of us earlier this year. Additionally, we will be purchasing generators for fire and police substations, as well as establishing 4 resiliency hubs across town.

I want to thank the City Manager, his Executive Leadership team, and the countless City employees who dedicate themselves to the betterment of our community, as well as our District 8 team for their unrelenting service to our neighbors."
