SAN ANTONIO (May 17, 2024) ~ San Antonio, TX - The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has declared an Ozone Action Day for the San Antonio area on Saturday, May 18, 2024. This announcement comes as atmospheric conditions are expected to be conducive to high levels of ozone air pollution in the region.
According to TCEQ, this will be the first Ozone Action Day of the year. On these days, individuals who are most vulnerable to the effects of air pollution - such as young children, older adults, and those with respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis - are advised to limit their outdoor activities. Those with asthma or difficulty breathing are strongly encouraged to stay indoors.
To combat this issue and maintain healthy air quality, residents and businesses are being urged to voluntarily adopt pollution-reducing practices. These include refueling cars and trucks after 6 p.m., avoiding drive-thrus at restaurants and opting for indoor dining instead, turning off vehicles instead of idling, setting thermostats 2-3 degrees higher from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., using public transportation or carpooling, and combining errands to reduce trips.

The City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) is also calling on everyone in the community to take action and help improve air quality while conserving energy. For more detailed information about ground-level ozone and its effects on health and the environment, residents can visit Metro Health's website.
As we continue to face challenges in maintaining clean air in our cities, it is crucial for individuals and businesses alike to take responsibility for their actions and make conscious efforts towards reducing pollution. Let us all do our part in keeping our air healthy for ourselves and future generations.
