SAN ANTONIO (August 11, 2022) - August kicks off National Breastfeeding Month, and San Antonio Metro Health is highlighting breastfeeding support programs and providing information and resources to families at events throughout San Antonio this month, see list of events below.

San Antonio Metro Health's WIC along with their Lactation Support Center, Healthy Start and Healthy Neighborhoods are joining together to celebrate the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action's theme "Step up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support" - a call for all people to come together to support, promote, and protect breastfeeding and breastfeeding mothers and babies.

San Antonio Metro Health Director Claude A. Jacob expressed the importance of offering education and awareness about breastfeeding, especially to expectant mothers. "Our programs encourage breastfeeding as a natural and integral part of raising a healthy child," he said. "As a public health organization, we embrace and recognize the health benefits breastfeeding plays in early childhood development."

Successful breastfeeding takes teamwork to support new moms. Metro Health WIC offers mom-to-mom support, personalized counseling, local support groups, and educates moms on the Texas law that allows women to breastfeed anywhere in public. In 2019, a new law was passed allowing women in Texas to pump breastmilk anywhere in public.

At Metro Health's San Antonio Lactation Support Center, moms can get assistance from International Board Certified Lactation Consultants and/or a Registered Nurse who provide personalized consultations, breastfeeding classes, and support groups at no cost to San Antonio parents, without income eligibility requirements.

Despite the recommendation to breastfeed exclusively for the first six months, fewer than half of Texas infants are exclusively breastfed through three months of age. Awareness and support by parents and the community are critical first steps in enabling mothers' efforts to breastfeed.
