SAN ANTONIO (February 28, 2024) –
The City of San Antonio's Charter Review Commission encourages residents to get involved in the City Charter review process by attending upcoming public comment sessions in March and April, or by giving input digitally or by phone. The City is seeking ideas and feedback about how to amend the City's Charter in the five areas below.
  • Independent ethics officer and review board
  • City Council compensation and term length
  • City Manager tenure and compensation
  • City Council districts and redistricting
  • Language updates to reflect current laws and processes

In-person public comment meetings will be hosted by the Commission at 5:30 p.m. on March 4, March 21, April 11, and April 25 at the Central Library (600 Soledad St.). "We look forward to hearing from the community at the upcoming sessions," Charter Review Co-Chairs Bonnie Prosser Elder and David Zammiello said. "These are a great way to learn more about the City Charter, hear the Commission's recommendations and provide important input."

Every two years, the City Charter can be amended to add new procedures, protocols and policies. The Commission consists of community members with expertise in the areas of municipal law, finance, education, public policy, and community engagement. They are tasked with researching and gathering public input to propose to City Council changes they believe would improve the Charter. The City Council then votes to decide if these amendments make it to the ballot for San Antonio voters.

The Commission meetings and public comment sessions are an opportunity to gather the community's input on provisions within the City Charter that should be updated.

A complete schedule for the 2024 Charter Review Commission Public Comment Sessions is shown below. Residents may sign up to speak at SASpeakUp.com/CharterReviewCommission or in person before each meeting.
