~ As severe weather threatens communities across the state, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to ensure that Texas is prepared to assist local officials. In a statement released today, the governor announced that he has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources ahead of heavy rain in the forecast over the weekend.

"Texas stands ready to assist local officials as severe weather threatens communities across the state," said Governor Abbott. "Today, I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate state resources in anticipation of potential flash flooding."

The National Weather Service has issued warnings for excessive rainfall and flash flooding across large areas of West, Northwest, Central, South, and Southeast Texas. This is due to moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Lorena interacting with a cold front. In addition, there is a risk for severe storms in North and Northeast Texas, which may bring damaging wind and large hail.

In light of these potential dangers, Texans are urged to take all necessary precautions for severe weather. This includes monitoring forecasts and road conditions closely, heeding guidance from state and local officials, and creating an emergency plan to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. The governor also reminded citizens to "Turn Around, Don't Drown" when encountering flooded roads.

At Governor Abbott's direction, several state emergency response resources have been made available to support local severe weather response operations. These include swiftwater rescue boat squads from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1), game wardens and rescue boat teams from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Blackhawk helicopters with hoist capabilities from the Texas National Guard, and a Severe Weather Support Package consisting of medics, ambulances, and all-terrain vehicles from the Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force).

Other agencies involved in this coordinated effort include the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), which will be monitoring road conditions, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), which will have helicopters with hoist capabilities and Texas Highway Patrol Troopers on standby, and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, which will provide disaster assessment and recovery agents as well as County Extension Agents to support agricultural and livestock needs.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas will be monitoring power outages and coordinating with utility providers, while the Railroad Commission of Texas will be keeping a close eye on the state's natural gas supply and communicating with the oil and gas industry. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will also be involved in air, water, and wastewater monitoring.

To ensure that citizens are prepared for any potential emergencies, Texans are urged to follow instructions from local officials, make an emergency plan, and build a kit containing emergency supplies.
