~ Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has declared a state of disaster in 85 counties due to ongoing drought conditions. The proclamation, issued on November 25, 2024, amends and renews a previous disaster proclamation from July 8, 2022.
The initial disaster proclamation was issued after Governor Abbott determined that exceptional drought conditions posed an imminent threat in several counties. The Texas Division of Emergency Management has confirmed that these same conditions persist in certain areas.
In accordance with Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, Governor Abbott has declared a disaster in Aransas, Atascosa, Bandera, Bastrop, Bee, Bexar, Blanco, Brewster, Burnet, Caldwell, Calhoun, Cameron and many other counties. This declaration gives the governor the authority to use all available resources of state government and political subdivisions to cope with the disaster.

Additionally, pursuant to Section 418.017 of the Texas Government Code, Governor Abbott has authorized the suspension of any regulatory statutes or orders that may hinder necessary action in response to this disaster. This includes any state statutes or administrative rules regarding contracting or procurement that may impede emergency response efforts.
The governor's proclamation also states that copies will be filed with applicable authorities as required by law. It is signed by Governor Abbott and attested by Secretary of State Jane Nelson.
This declaration comes as many parts of Texas continue to experience severe drought conditions. The affected counties include Aransas County on the Gulf Coast and Atascosa County near San Antonio. Other affected areas include Bandera County in central Texas and Bastrop County near Austin.
Residents and local officials are urged to take necessary precautions and follow any evacuation orders or emergency procedures issued by authorities. The governor's office will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
