~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has been granted federal approval to allow Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in 36 counties affected by Hurricane Beryl to purchase hot foods and ready-to-eat meals using their benefits.
In a statement, Governor Abbott expressed his commitment to ensuring that impacted Texans have access to fresh and quality food as they recover from the hurricane. He also acknowledged the ongoing power outages in the affected areas and how this approval will help eligible individuals and families purchase hot, ready-to-eat meals.
HHSC Deputy Executive Commissioner of Access and Eligibility Services Molly Regan emphasized the necessity of being able to purchase hot food for SNAP recipients who are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. She noted that many families are still unable to prepare meals due to power outages.
The federal approval allows SNAP recipients in Angelina, Austin, Brazoria, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Houston, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Lavaca, Liberty, Madison, Matagorda, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Newton, Orange Polk Rusk Sabine San Augustine San Jacinto Shelby Trinity Tyler Victoria Walker Waller and Wharton counties to use their Lone Star Cards at participating retailers until August 14th. This includes purchasing items such as rotisserie chicken and deli items that are hot at the point of sale.
