~ In a move to support career and technical education (CTE) training programs, Governor Greg Abbott has announced a grant of over $329,000 for Westwood Independent School District (ISD). The grant, awarded by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), is part of the Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) program and will aid in the purchase and installation of equipment to train 172 students as welders in partnership with Trinity Valley Community College.
Governor Abbott expressed his commitment to investing in the future workforce of Texas, stating that it is crucial for the state to remain the "Best State for Business, jobs, and opportunity." He also highlighted the life-changing potential of career and technical skills, emphasizing that this grant will provide students with valuable training that can lead to high-demand and well-paying jobs after graduation.
TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel echoed this sentiment, stating that investing in the local workforce not only benefits individuals pursuing careers in welding but also strengthens the overall economy of the region. He commended Westwood ISD for their contribution to their community's growth and prosperity by providing opportunities for students to gain valuable skills and secure stable employment.

The award was presented earlier today by TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Joe Esparza at a ceremony attended by state and local officials, school staff, and CTE students at Westwood ISD in Palestine, Texas. This investment in CTE programs is made possible through funding provided by the Texas Legislature every two years. The JET grants aim to defray start-up costs for developing career and technical education programs at public community colleges, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools.
It is important to note that equipment funded through JET grants must be used specifically for training students in high-demand occupations. With this grant, Westwood ISD will be able to provide its students with access to modern equipment necessary for their future careers in welding.
This investment in CTE training programs not only benefits the students but also contributes to the overall economic growth and prosperity of Texas. With the support of the state government and organizations like TWC, more Texans will have access to opportunities that lead to better jobs and higher wages.
