~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that three schools in the Metroplex region have been awarded career training grants totaling over $580,700. These grants, known as Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants, were awarded through the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and will support career and technical education (CTE) training programs.

The purpose of these grants is to help schools purchase and install equipment that will train students for high-demand occupations after graduation. This includes occupations such as medical assistants and heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers. In total, these grants will initially train over 280 students for these in-demand jobs.

Governor Abbott expressed his excitement about the impact these grants will have on the state's economy. "Texas' booming economy is built by our hardworking and highly skilled workforce," he stated. "These grants will empower hundreds of students in the Metroplex region to go directly from graduation into high-demand, good paying careers."

TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel also emphasized the importance of career and technical education programs in closing the skills gap and creating new career paths. "Today's JET grant awards will allow hundreds of young Texans to train for in-demand occupations," he said.

The awards were presented earlier today at a ceremony attended by state and local officials, as well as school staff at Collin Higher Education Center. The three schools receiving JET grants are Collin County Community College District, Dallas College, and Denton Independent School District in partnership with North Central Texas College.

Collin County Community College District received a grant of $144,827 to train 101 students as medical assistants. Dallas College received $164,293 to train 108 students as heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers. Denton Independent School District received $271,638 to train 72 students as heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.

Funding for JET grants is provided by the Texas Legislature every two years. These grants are used to defray start-up costs for developing or expanding career and technical education programs in public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased with JET grant funds must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations.

The JET grant awards for the current fiscal year have yet to be announced, but TWC will release this information in the coming months. To learn more about TWC's JET grant program, visit their website.
