~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced the launch of a new system called Sentinel, which aims to enhance the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff in school buildings across Texas. This innovative system is provided by the Texas Education Agency's (TEA) Office of School Safety and Security and is available to all schools in the state at no cost.

According to Governor Abbott, with a new school year approaching, the safety of students and school personnel remains a top priority. He believes that Sentinel will play a crucial role in improving school safety standards by expanding the state's threat assessment process, improving real-time communication capabilities, and safeguarding children, teachers, and school communities.

The Governor expressed his gratitude towards TEA and Chief Scott for their partnership with superintendents and school safety personnel from all over the state in creating and implementing this cutting-edge technology.

Chief John P. Scott of School Safety and Security also shared his thoughts on Sentinel's launch. He stated that TEA's Office of School Safety and Security is constantly searching for ways to better support the 1,200 school systems in Texas in their efforts to keep students and staff safe. He believes that Sentinel represents this continued focus and is grateful for Governor Abbott's support in making this critical safety infrastructure operational.

Sentinel will standardize Behavioral Threat Assessments (BTAs) into a single reporting mechanism, providing schools with a clear way to conduct BTAs and manage threats. This uniform approach will help school systems identify, assess, and mitigate risks to students and staff.

Moreover, Sentinel will also play an essential role in statewide emergency operations by providing timely and accurate information to state leaders for quick decision-making regarding resource allocation and support. In case of a local or statewide emergency, schools will be informed through Sentinel's mass communications capability. This will enable TEA to securely communicate guidance, resources or other important information to schools.

The development of Sentinel was initiated after the passage of House Bill 3, which strengthened state monitoring of school safety and increased the school safety allotment. Additionally, Senate Bill 30 provided an additional $1.1 billion for school systems to enhance the safety of their facilities.

In 2022, Governor Abbott directed TEA Commissioner Mike Morath to create the position of Chief of School Safety and Security to ensure increased communication and collaboration among state agencies in providing a safe environment for Texas students and school faculty.

Sentinel's launch marks a significant step towards improving school safety in Texas. With its comprehensive approach and advanced technology, it is expected to make a positive impact on the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff in schools across the state.
