Texas: Governor Abbott Appoints Five To State Independent Living Council

~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott has appointed five individuals to the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities. The council is responsible for developing the state plan for Independent Living and providing resources to state and local organizations on issues related to disabilities.
Among the appointees is Pipa McCollister, an administrative assistant from Cleburne. McCollister brings a wealth of experience to the council, having previously worked as a teacher and caretaker. She holds an Associates of Arts from Tarrant County College and a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Stephen F. Austin State University.
Seth Wells, executive director of the RISE Center for Independent Living in Beaumont, has also been appointed to the council. Wells is actively involved in his community, serving as vice president of the TEXCIL Association of Centers for Independent Living and holding leadership positions in various organizations such as the American Legion Post 33 and Cub Scout Pack 122. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from McMurry University and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration from Lamar University.
Former State Representative Cindy Burkett of Seagoville has also been appointed to the council. Burkett served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2010 to 2019 and held various committee assignments during her tenure, including chairing committees on Redistricting, Appropriations, Transportation, Public Health, and more. She is also actively involved in her local community through her membership in various chambers of commerce. Burkett received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from The University of Texas at Arlington.

Michael Garrett, a retired senior equities analyst for JP Morgan Chase, has been reappointed to the council. Garrett brings extensive knowledge and experience in finance as well as advocacy for individuals with disabilities. He currently serves on the American Council of the Blind of Texas Board of Directors and is involved with several other organizations such as the Houston Center for Independent Living and the Greater Houston Beep Baseball Association. Garrett holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin.
The final appointee is David Lunt, senior manager of supplier diversity at Fidelity Investments, LLC. Lunt is a strong advocate for the disability community and volunteers with various organizations such as REACH and Disability:IN North Texas. He also serves as board president for REACH and has previously served on the Fort Worth Mayor's Committee on Persons with Disabilities.
All five appointees will serve terms set to expire on October 24, 2027. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences will bring valuable perspectives to the council as they work towards improving the lives of individuals with disabilities in Texas.
