Texas: Governor Abbott Appoints Six To The Nueces River Authority

~ Governor Greg Abbott has recently made several appointments and reappointments to the Nueces River Authority, a crucial organization responsible for managing and preserving the waters of the Nueces River Basin. The appointments were announced through a press release, with the Governor appointing Olen "Feller" Hughs, Daniel "Danny" Kelley, and Daniel Suckley, while also reappointing Jane Bell and Lisa Greenberg. Additionally, Shannon Freund has been appointed for a term set to expire in 2027.

Olen "Feller" Hughs, a retired resident of Barksdale, brings a wealth of experience to the Authority. He previously served as the president of Consolidated Beef Producers and was a board member of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. Hughs is also actively involved in his community as the lay leader and treasurer at Barksdale Methodist Church and a former volunteer firefighter with the Liberal Fire Department. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Texas Tech University.

Joining Hughs on the Authority is Daniel "Danny" Kelley from Karnes City. After thirty years as an engineer, Kelley retired and now serves as the financial secretary for Karnes City Knights of Columbus. He is also an extraordinary minister at Immaculate Conception Church and volunteers with Meals on Wheels. Kelley received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University.

Daniel Suckley, a senior lender and team leader at American Bank in Corpus Christi, has also been appointed by Governor Abbott. Suckley brings extensive knowledge in finance to the Authority, having served on various boards such as Robert and Janis Birchall Foundation, Visit Corpus Christi, Padre Island Business Association, and American Cancer Society. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Jane Bell of Corpus Christi has been reappointed to continue her service on the Authority. Bell previously served as the area director for the American Diabetes Association in Corpus Christi and is currently a board member for the Corpus Christi Education Foundation and the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra. She is also an associate member of the Charity League of Corpus Christi and a former trustee for the Corpus Christi Independent School District School Board. Bell received her Bachelor of Journalism from The University of Texas at Austin.

Lisa Greenberg, an attorney with the Law Office of Lisa Greenberg, has also been reappointed to the Authority. She is actively involved in various legal organizations, including serving as a board member for the Texas Criminal Defense Attorneys Association and president of Coastal Bend Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Greenberg is also the board chair for Nueces County Public Defender's Office. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Public Administration from Texas Tech University, as well as a Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law.

The final appointment made by Governor Abbott is Shannon Freund from Beeville. Freund currently serves as customer development manager at Advantage Solutions – Mars Wrigley and brings her expertise in business to the Authority. She is also actively involved in her community, serving on the board of Beeville Education Foundation and graduating from Leadership Bee County. Freund holds a Bachelor of Arts from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

All appointments are subject to Senate confirmation, but Governor Abbott has shown confidence in these individuals to effectively carry out their duties on the Nueces River Authority. Their terms are set to expire on February 1, 2031 for Hughs, Kelley, Suckley, Bell, and Greenberg, while Freund's term will expire on February 1, 2027. With their diverse backgrounds and experiences, these appointees are sure to make valuable contributions to preserving one of Texas' most important natural resources - its rivers.
