~ In a recent development, Governor Greg Abbott has expressed his concerns regarding the sponsorship of the 2026 Houston Islamic Games by the New Jersey Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR NJ). In a letter addressed to Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD), Governor Abbott has urged them to reconsider their decision to offer public school facilities for this event.
The letter, which was made public today, states that Governor Abbott has designated "the Muslim Brotherhood and its successor organization CAIR" as foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal organizations under state law. He further emphasizes that allowing such groups to utilize taxpayer-funded facilities is not acceptable and immediate action must be taken to curb the spread of Islamic extremism.
At the direction of the Governor, CFISD has been instructed to preserve all records and communications related to this event and confirm within seven days that any negotiations or agreements for the event have been terminated. Failure to comply with these instructions may result in further action being taken by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

Governor Abbott's actions against CAIR are not new. He has previously requested that U.S. Secretary Bessent suspend CAIR's tax-exempt status and directed the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to launch criminal investigations into both CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood. In addition, he has also ordered investigations into Sharia Courts.
The Governor's letter can be viewed here, where he reiterates his commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting Texas communities from threats posed by these organizations. It is clear that he will not tolerate any involvement or support for groups that have been designated as foreign terrorist organizations.
This latest development serves as a reminder of Governor Abbott's strong stance against Islamic extremism and his determination to take necessary actions to safeguard Texans from potential dangers. The TEA will continue its investigation into this matter and any findings will be referred to the Texas Attorney General for further legal action.
