~ In the wake of the brutal murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray by members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA), Governor Greg Abbott has demanded that Vice President Kamala Harris declare TdA as a foreign terrorist organization during her visit to Houston. The Governor has called out Harris for her open border policies, which he claims have allowed over 11 million illegal immigrants and dangerous criminals into the country in the last four years.
Governor Abbott stated, "Vice President Harris conveniently claims she cares about securing our border, yet her policies have put the lives of every American at risk. Today, she is in Houston, the same city where innocent Jocelyn Nungaray was raped and murdered by two TdA gang members. Jocelyn, her family, and all Americans deserve better. Vice President Harris must follow Texas' lead and designate TdA as a foreign terrorist organization immediately."
Last month, Governor Abbott launched a comprehensive operation to aggressively target TdA and disrupt their criminal operations in Texas. He also designated them as a foreign terrorist organization and directed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to elevate them to a Tier 1 gang. Additionally, a TdA Strike Team was created to identify and arrest gang members.

Working with federal and local partners at the Houston Texas Anti-Gang Center, DPS recently captured and arrested a TdA gang member in Houston. In an effort to further combat their criminal activities, Governor Abbott's Public Safety Office is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of known or suspected TdA gang members involved in criminal activity.
Governor Abbott has taken unprecedented action to secure the border amidst federal government inaction. This includes securing over $11 billion in funding for Texas' border security efforts, launching Operation Lone Star which deployed thousands of National Guard soldiers and DPS troopers, and building strategic barriers along the Texas-Mexico border.
The Governor has also taken steps to aid border communities, such as busing thousands of migrants to other cities and designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations. In addition, he has established the Texas Military Base in Eagle Pass to have a permanent presence at the border and has arrested and jailed criminals trespassing or committing other state crimes along the southern border.
Governor Abbott has also signed multiple laws to address illegal immigration and human trafficking, including criminalizing illegal entry into Texas from a foreign nation, creating a mandatory 10-year minimum prison sentence for human smuggling, and making it easier to prosecute smugglers bringing people into Texas.

In response to the growing national fentanyl crisis, Governor Abbott has enhanced penalties for manufacturing and distributing fentanyl. He has also signed a sweeping package of border security laws during the 88th Regular Legislative Session and issued a disaster declaration for the border crisis.
To prevent non-governmental entities from transporting illegal immigrants, Governor Abbott issued an executive order. He also signed memoranda of understanding with four Mexican states to enhance border security measures in their states that will prevent illegal immigration from Mexico to Texas.
In addition, Governor Abbott activated the Joint Border Security Operations Center (JBSOC) and directed DPS, the Texas Military Department, and the Texas Division of Emergency Management to coordinate efforts in securing the border.
Governor Abbott's actions demonstrate his commitment to protecting Texans from dangerous criminal organizations like TdA. As Vice President Harris visits Houston today, it is imperative that she follows Texas' lead in designating TdA as a foreign terrorist organization and using all available resources to eradicate them once and for all. The lives of innocent Americans like Jocelyn Nungaray depend on it.
