~ In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to deploy state emergency response resources to assist with recovery efforts in North Carolina. This decision was made following a request from North Carolina Emergency Management.

Governor Abbott expressed his condolences for those who lost their lives during the hurricane and stated that Texas will continue to support their fellow Americans in this time of need. The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has left dangerous flood waters and debris, posing a threat to both humans and animals. To ensure the safety and well-being of personnel and canines involved in search and rescue operations, Texas has deployed a veterinary emergency team (VET) along with medical and logistics personnel.

The VET, which is part of Texas A&M University, will provide medical care and decontamination services for working dogs involved in search and rescue operations. The team will also be assisted by disaster assessment and recovery agents from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

This deployment of resources is in addition to the assistance provided by Texas earlier this week when they sent emergency power generators to Georgia following the storm. Last week, Texas A&M Task Force 1 was also deployed to Florida ahead of storm impacts.

The deployment of these resources is coordinated under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), which is a state-to-state mutual aid system. This system allows states to provide assistance and share resources with each other during times of disaster or emergency. EMAC members can share resources from all disciplines, protect personnel who deploy, and be reimbursed for mission-related costs.

For more information on EMAC, visit emacweb.org. Governor Abbott extends his gratitude to all first responders and emergency management personnel who are working tirelessly around the clock to support their fellow Americans affected by Hurricane Helene.
