~ As the spring season brings the potential for severe weather and hurricane season quickly approaching, Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) are urging Texans to take advantage of the annual Emergency Supplies Sales Tax Holiday. This year's tax-free holiday will take place from Saturday, April 26, through Monday, April 28.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of having emergency supplies readily available in case of any weather-related emergencies. "Having emergency supplies on-hand is one of the best ways Texans can keep themselves and their loved ones safe during emergency weather events," he stated. He encouraged all Texans to participate in this tax-free holiday and purchase essential items such as flashlights, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers.

The Emergency Supplies Sales Tax Holiday was established in 2015 after Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 904 into law. This law allows Texans to purchase certain emergency preparation supplies tax-free both in-store and online during the designated weekend each year. The Texas Comptroller's website contains a list of eligible items and qualifying purchases for reference.
With unpredictable spring storms on the horizon and hurricane season officially beginning on June 1, it is crucial for Texans to proactively prepare an emergency supply kit. The TDEM website offers disaster preparedness tips at tdem.texas.gov/prepare, while TexasReady.gov provides information on emergency planning resources, including guidance on assembling a supply kit.
Texans are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to stock up on necessary supplies and be prepared for any potential emergencies that may arise. Let us all do our part in staying safe and ready for whatever Mother Nature may bring our way.
