~ As Hurricane Beryl continues to make its way towards the Texas coast, Governor Greg Abbott has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of Texans. In a press release issued today, the Governor directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to increase the readiness level of the State Emergency Operations Center to Level II, effective at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 5.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of being prepared for potential landfall of Hurricane Beryl and urged Texans and visitors in south coastal areas to make an emergency plan, review hurricane evacuation routes, and closely monitor weather conditions. He also assured that Texas is ready to quickly deploy all available emergency response resources to assist at-risk communities.

This decision follows an advisory notice issued yesterday to 39 Texas Emergency Management Council Agencies, instructing them to prepare for hurricane response and recovery efforts. The agencies were also asked to develop 24/7 staffing plans for the State Emergency Operations Center in case Hurricane Beryl's forecast track further materializes with expected impacts on the Texas Gulf Coast.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Beryl is currently a major Category 3 hurricane and is expected to continue its west-northwest path through the Caribbean before turning more northwestward towards Texas this weekend. As a result, interests in Texas are advised to closely monitor this system and prepare for potential hurricane impacts such as major flooding.

In response to Governor Abbott's direction, TDEM has issued an activation notice increasing the readiness level of the Texas State Operations Center to 24-hour Level II operations starting at 10 a.m. on Friday. Additionally, they have readied various state resources for potential deployment including search and rescue personnel from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1), all-hazard incident strike teams from Texas A&M Forest Service's Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS), National Guard personnel, and various departments from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Department of State Health Services, and Department of Transportation.

Governor Abbott also urged Texans to stay informed and follow directions from local officials, make an emergency plan, review hurricane evacuation routes, and build an emergency supply kit. Visitors to Texas beaches were also reminded to review beach safety tips and be aware of the risks of rip currents during an approaching tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico.

Texans can find more information about Hurricane Beryl on the TDEM Disaster Portal or Texas Hurricane Center webpages. They can also visit TexasReady.gov and tdem.texas.gov/prepare for additional storm safety and preparedness information. As the situation continues to develop, additional state resources will remain on standby for deployment as needed.
