~ On May 16th, 2023, Governor Greg Abbott of the State of Texas declared a state of disaster in Cameron County due to a severe thunderstorm and flooding event that began on May 10th. The event included heavy rainfall, flash flooding, tornadoes, and hazardous wind gusts that caused widespread and severe property damage, injury, or loss of life.
In accordance with Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, Governor Abbott authorized the use of all available resources of state government and political subdivisions to cope with this disaster. Furthermore, he suspended any regulatory statute or administrative rule regarding contracting or procurement that would impede any state agency's emergency response necessary to protect life or property threatened by this declared disaster for the duration of this declared disaster.

The proclamation was signed by Governor Abbott in Austin and attested by Secretary of State Jane Nelson. Copies were filed with applicable authorities in accordance with statutory requirements.
The citizens of Cameron County are urged to take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property from further damage due to this disaster.
