Texas: Governor Abbott Names Chair, Appoints Two To Statewide Health Coordinating Council

~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Dakota Marks and reappointed Emily Hunt, D.N.P. to the Statewide Health Coordinating Council. The terms for both members will expire on August 31, 2029. Additionally, the Governor has named Yasser Zeid, M.D. as the new chair of the Council.
The Statewide Health Coordinating Council is responsible for ensuring that all Texans have access to quality healthcare services and facilities through various health planning activities. Based on these planning activities, the SHCC makes recommendations to the Governor and the Texas Legislature through the Texas State Health Plan (TSHP). The Council also plays a crucial role in providing guidance for the development of the TSHP, submitting it to the governor, and promoting its implementation.
Dakota Marks, a resident of Huntington, brings a wealth of experience to his new role as a member of the SHCC. He currently serves as an account executive with Townsquare Media and is actively involved in various community organizations such as the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, Angelina Rotary Club, and Nacogdoches Jaycees. In addition to his professional commitments, Marks also volunteers as an instructor for Junior Achievement of Angelina County and coaches for the Huntington Youth Softball Association.

Emily Hunt, D.N.P., hailing from Houston, has been reappointed to her position on the SHCC. She currently serves as the director of advanced practice providers at Texas Children's Urgent Care and is also a part-time faculty instructor at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. With memberships in prestigious organizations such as American Academy of Pediatrics and National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, Hunt brings valuable expertise in pediatric healthcare to her role on the Council. She holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Nursing from University of Iowa and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Rush University.
The newly appointed chair of the Council, Yasser Zeid, M.D., is a well-respected figure in the healthcare industry. He currently serves as the CEO, president, and medical director of Zeid Medical Group, PLLC and is also the chief medical officer at Huntsville Memorial Hospital. With memberships in organizations such as American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Texas Medical Association, Zeid brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role. He has been a gubernatorial appointee on the SHCC since 2016 and holds a Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery from Ain Shams University, a Master's degree in Health Care Transformation from The University of Texas at Austin, and is expected to receive a Master's degree in Healthcare Administration from Trinity University in August 2025.
