~ Austin, TX- Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Imelda Garcia as the new Chair of the Task Force on Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response. Garcia, who currently serves as the Interim Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), will hold this position for a term to expire at the pleasure of the Governor.
The Task Force, which was established to provide expert and evidence-based assessments, protocols, and recommendations related to the state's response to infectious diseases, plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of Texas citizens. In addition, it serves as a reliable and transparent source of information and education for state leaders.

Garcia brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She has been with the Department since 2007 and has held various leadership positions, including associate commissioner of the Laboratory and Infectious Disease Services Division. In 2025, she was named chief deputy commissioner.
Garcia holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mexican American Studies with a concentration in public policy from The University of Texas at Austin. She also earned a Master of Public Health from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.
Governor Abbott expressed confidence in Garcia's abilities to lead the Task Force and ensure that Texas is prepared to respond effectively to any infectious disease outbreaks. Her appointment is effective immediately.
