~ Governor Greg Abbott has officially ordered a special election to fill the vacancy in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 18th Congressional District of Texas, following the death of the Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee.
According to Article I, Section 2, Clause 4 of the U.S. Constitution and Section 204.021 of the Texas Election Code, a special election must be held in the event of a vacancy in Congress. The date for this election is determined by state law, as stated in Title 2, Section 8 of the U.S. Code.
In accordance with Section 3.003(a)(3) and (b) of the Texas Election Code, Governor Abbott has issued a proclamation ordering the special election. The election is set to take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, which is the first uniform election date occurring on or after the 36th day after the date that the special election is ordered.

Candidates who wish to run for this position must file their applications with the Secretary of State no later than Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 6:00 p.m., as stated in Section 201.054(f) of the Texas Election Code.
Early voting by personal appearance will begin on Monday, October 21, 2024 and end on Friday, November 1, 2024 in accordance with Section 85.001(a) and (c) of the Texas Election Code.
The Governor's proclamation has been sent to Harris County Judge and all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that this special election is conducted properly and its results are proclaimed in accordance with law.
Governor Abbott signed his name and affixed his official seal at his office in Austin on August 2nd, testifying to this order. The Secretary of State Jane Nelson also attested to this proclamation.
This news comes as a significant development for Congressional District 18, which is wholly contained within Harris County. The special election will determine who will serve out the unexpired term of the late Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee.
