~ Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to provide assistance to South Texas communities affected by the Welder Fire. In a statement released today, Governor Abbott announced that he has requested a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for the impacted areas.
The disaster declaration, if approved, will make federal assistance available through low-interest loans for San Patricio County and its neighboring counties. This move comes after an analysis of the damage sustained in the affected communities was conducted by local, state, and federal officials. The analysis confirmed that San Patricio County meets the federally-required thresholds for SBA assistance.
In his statement, Governor Abbott expressed his admiration for the resilience of South Texans in the face of this disaster. He also emphasized the importance of providing resources to help those affected rebuild their communities. The governor thanked the Texas Division of Emergency Management for their partnership with state and local officials in ensuring that Texas meets all eligibility requirements for financial assistance.

If approved, the SBA will provide low-interest loans through its disaster programs to qualifying Texans whose homes and businesses were damaged during the Welder Fire. This request from Governor Abbott follows previous actions taken to support communities impacted by wildfires in Texas.
These actions include obtaining approval for Fire Management Assistance Grants for multiple fires, activating additional state emergency response resources ahead of critical fire weather conditions, and increasing readiness levels at the Texas State Emergency Operations Center.
Governor Abbott has also requested officials from the SBA to join state and local partners in conducting joint preliminary damage assessments in South Texas communities affected by recent wildfire activity. This is part of his ongoing efforts to provide all available resources to support these communities during this difficult time.
The governor's request for a disaster declaration from the SBA highlights his commitment to helping Texans recover from natural disasters and ensuring that they have access to necessary resources. As recovery efforts continue in South Texas, Governor Abbott remains dedicated to supporting those impacted by this devastating fire.
