~ In an effort to make the college application process easier and more efficient for Texas students, Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) have launched a new initiative called Direct Admissions. This innovative tool, which is now available on the state's one-stop college and career advising website, My Texas Future, aims to streamline the process and provide students with a list of participating Texas institutions where they can qualify for acceptance before even beginning the application process.

Governor Abbott expressed his commitment to ensuring that the next generation of Texans have access to the best education options in order to succeed in high-demand, well-paying jobs after graduation. As a father himself, he understands the confusion and stress that can come with navigating the college application process. With Direct Admissions, he hopes to make it easier for young students and their families to choose the best Texas college or university for their future success.

Interim Commissioner of Higher Education Sarah Keyton also acknowledged the challenges that students face when applying for college. She emphasized that Direct Admissions has the potential to reduce time, boost confidence, and increase transparency in order to encourage more Texans who may not have otherwise considered college to take that next step.

Chair of THECB Dr. Fred Farias echoed these sentiments, stating that Direct Admissions will help more students achieve their educational goals while also providing a highly educated workforce for Texas' rapidly growing economy.

Through Direct Admissions, students can share their academic information such as class rank, grade point average, and SAT/ACT scores through their My Texas Future profile. This information will then be used by participating institutions to determine if a student qualifies for direct admission. Students can receive this list as early as the end of their junior year.

Once students know where they can be admitted via Direct Admissions, they will need to complete an application through ApplyTexas in order to verify their academic information. This also allows higher education institutions to determine if students qualify for scholarship and program offers. However, if a student does not qualify for direct admission at a particular college or university, they may still apply through the traditional application process.

Currently, there are 31 universities participating in Direct Admissions, including well-known institutions such as Texas A&M University-College Station, The University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Houston. This initiative was made possible with support from philanthropic funds through THECB's official nonprofit partner, the Texas Higher Education Foundation.

Direct Admissions is just one of the many tools developed by THECB to help Texas students and families achieve their education and career goals. Other resources include My Texas Future and ApplyTexas.

Students and families who are interested in learning more about Direct Admissions can visit My Texas Future for more information. With this new initiative in place, Governor Abbott and THECB hope to create a brighter future for the state of Texas by making the college admissions process more efficient and effective for all students.
