~ In a move to address the growing healthcare workforce shortage in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has announced the release of a comprehensive report by the Healthcare Workforce Task Force. The report includes recommendations to tackle this pressing issue and ensure that Texans have access to quality medical care.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of training the next generation of healthcare professionals in order to meet the demands of a rapidly growing state. He acknowledged that while Texas has already invested millions in job training grants, more needs to be done to address this shortage. With a booming economy and a growing population, it is crucial to have a highly skilled healthcare workforce that can support the health needs of Texans.
Task Force Chair Victoria Ford expressed her gratitude for being given the opportunity to serve as Chair and work with the task force and advisory committees. She also thanked the experts, industry leaders, and higher education representatives who contributed their expertise and real-world experience to this important project.

The task force was created earlier this year by Governor Abbott, who directed the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to address healthcare workforce shortages. The 12-member task force, led by Victoria Ford, examined various aspects such as training, resources, and education needed to tackle this challenge.
Over the course of five months, the task force engaged with over 70 subject matter experts, 50 stakeholders, and seven state agencies to evaluate the healthcare workforce shortage in Texas. The recommendations presented in their report aim to create and expand high-quality opportunities in healthcare education, ensure accurate and comprehensive workforce data is available, and innovate ways to adapt and evolve the healthcare workforce.
Some of these recommendations include coordinating state healthcare workforce planning more effectively by creating a Statewide Health Professions Workforce Coordinating Council (HPWCC), expanding the number of pharmacy technicians in Texas, creating a start-up fund for sponsors of apprenticeship programs, improving curriculum alignment between high school and university programs for credentials related to healthcare, and expanding the availability of instructional materials for health professions and career and technical education programs.

To ensure continuous improvement and effectiveness in healthcare education and training, the task force recommends creating a program evaluation unit. The report also emphasizes the importance of continuing investment in scholarship and loan repayment programs.
