~ In the wake of President Joe Biden's decision to end Title 42 and his refusal to enforce federal immigration laws, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken unprecedented action to secure the border. In letters sent to each of his fellow Governors, Governor Abbott requested support in responding to the ongoing border crisis through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact.
Governor Abbott highlighted the Texas taxpayer dollars already allocated for border security operations along the Texas-Mexico border and requested his fellow Governors also help provide funding for their state's border security response. Since 2021, Texas has spent more than $4.5 billion on critical border security operations, with the Texas Legislature currently looking to fund an additional $4.6 billion for the next two years. He noted that Texas should not have to shoulder the financial burden of protecting our nation alone.
The Governor thanked states such as Idaho and Florida, which have recently stepped up to offer assistance in securing the southern border with law enforcement support and assets. He also outlined a number of actions taken by him and his administration in order to secure the border, including: securing $4 billion in funding for Texas' border security efforts; launching Operation Lone Star; deploying thousands of Texas National Guard soldiers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers; deploying a new Tactical Border Force; hiring a Border Czar; aiding border communities; designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations; arresting criminals trespassing or committing other state crimes along the southern border; allocating resources to acquire 1,700 unused steel panels for building a wall; signing 15 laws cracking down on human trafficking in Texas; signing a law enhancing penalties for fentanyl manufacturing and distribution; issuing a disaster declaration for the border crisis; activating a Joint Border Security Operations Center (JBSOC); and directing various departments to coordinate their response in order to secure the border.
