WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2024 ~ Washington D.C. - Registration for the 2024 Run for Austin Virtual 5K on November 9th has officially opened, inviting hundreds of journalists and press freedom supporters to lace up and join the cause. The run, which serves as a fundraiser for the Austin Tice fund and part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness, is a virtual event that can be completed from anywhere in the world.
The run was first organized by the National Press Club in 2021, with the goal of keeping Austin Tice's story alive and supporting efforts to bring him home. Tice, a Marine combat veteran and award-winning journalist, has been unjustly detained in Syria since 2012 while reporting on the refugee crisis.
"Austin is always on our mind and hearts; his absence is deeply felt every day by our whole family," said Debra Tice, Austin's mother. "The run serves as a time for people to think about Austin and share his story with those who may not have heard it. It also creates a way for people to support the effort to get him home."

The National Press Club President Emily Wilkins emphasized the urgency of bringing Tice home, stating that he has been held hostage longer than any other U.S. journalist. "The National Press Club is honored to stand with and support the Tice family, and we will continue to do so until Austin is free," she said.
The funds raised from this year's run will go towards supplementing the FBI reward for information leading to Tice's safe return or helping him transition back into his life after detention. A small portion will also be used to support the Tice family's travel and advocacy efforts.
For those who prefer not to run alone, meet-ups have been organized in several cities including Colorado Springs/Denver, Colorado; Houston, Texas; Richmond, Virginia; Tacoma, Washington; and Washington D.C. Those interested in creating a meet-up in their area can register for the race and email the organizers for more information.
The virtual 5K can be completed at any time on November 9th, and participants are encouraged to share their experience on social media using the hashtag #RunForAustin5K. Registration is open now at https://runsignup.com/Race/DC/Washington/RunFor....
Cecily Scott Martin, the contact person for the event, can be reached at [email] or 202-662-7525 for any further inquiries. Let's all come together to support Austin Tice and his family in their fight for justice and freedom.
