CHICAGO, Sept. 19, 2024 ~ The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) has announced that the nation's premier osteopathic medical education conference, OMED, will be held from September 20-22, 2024 at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio. This annual event brings together thousands of osteopathic physicians (DOs), medical students, and other healthcare professionals from across the country.

OMED is known for its diverse learning and networking opportunities, with a focus on innovative topics such as health information technology and applications of generative AI for clinical medicine. The conference also provides insights from industry leaders on the future of healthcare and culturally competent care.

This year's conference offers over 200 hours of continuing medical education (CME) credit across 20 medical specialties. Participants have the option to attend in person in San Antonio or access on-demand programming through an online conference platform.

According to AOA President Teresa A. Hubka, DO, FACOOG (Dist.), FACOG, CS, "We have an impressive lineup of keynote speakers and presenters who will inspire and enlighten while providing dynamic education that showcases the true distinctiveness of osteopathic medicine."

Some highlights of OMED24 include main stage sessions from nationally recognized experts and influential thought leaders. These sessions will cover pivotal issues in healthcare and feature speakers such as NASA Chief Health and Medical Officer James D. Polk, DO; Physician to the U.S. President Kevin O'Connor, DO; Emmy-award winning media personality Montel Williams; and retired WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings.

In addition to these main stage sessions, there will also be an Exhibit Hall featuring medical innovators and industry leaders offering dynamic presentations, groundbreaking technologies, and engaging discussions.

OMED24 will also offer educational didactic sessions across 20 medical specialties including Addiction Medicine, Allergy and Immunology, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Hematology, Internal Medicine, Military, Neurology/Psychiatry, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Occupational and Preventive Medicine, Orthopedics, Osteopathy, Pathology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Prolotherapy, Radiology and Sports Medicine.

The AOA also shared some statistics about the growth of the osteopathic profession in the U.S. In the past five years alone, the number of DOs has increased by over 30%. Currently, DOs make up 11% of the U.S. physician workforce and 25% of medical students are pursuing careers in osteopathic medicine. DOs practice in every medical specialty and hold prominent positions in medicine today.

AOA CEO Kathleen S. Creason, MBA stated that "the osteopathic profession continues to grow exponentially" and highlighted the critical role that DOs play in providing care for patients in underserved areas and high-demand specialties.
