HOUSTON, Nov. 25, 2024 ~ University of Houston Law Center alumnus Ron Robins has made a generous donation of $600,000 to his alma mater, establishing a merit scholarship for students and the W. Ronald Robins Endowed Professor of Law. The retired attorney, who graduated from UHLC in 1969, spent 55 years practicing intellectual property law and was admitted to practice in various courts including the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Dean Leonard M. Baynes expressed his pride in Robins' professional achievements and his dedication to giving back to his alma mater. He stated, "Ron is paving the way for those who follow him." Baynes also highlighted Robins' success in breaking barriers for UHLC graduates to be hired by major Houston law firms, with the school now ranking #23 on Law.com's list of law schools that place graduates at the largest 100 firms in the nation.

The goal of Robins' endowed professorship is to attract and retain distinguished faculty, promote research and scholarship, and enhance the reputation of the Law Center. In explaining his motivation for this donation, Robins emphasized the importance of quality faculty in a university program. He stated, "A law school...succeeds by the quality of its faculty...[they] provide the essential connection between the subject matter and students seeking to master it."

Robins' own journey to becoming a successful attorney began with an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from Lamar University. However, he had always considered pursuing a career in law and was eventually admitted to UHLC where he discovered his passion for it. He credits his education at UHLC for instilling in him important skills such as research, writing, problem-solving, and advocacy that were crucial for his success as an intellectual property lawyer.

Robins' generosity towards his alma mater was also inspired by changes in financial circumstances for students pursuing higher education. He recalls a time when tuition at Texas state colleges and universities was almost free, and he was able to complete seven years of undergraduate and postgraduate education without incurring any debt. In light of this, Robins believes that the endowed professorship is a way for him to repay some of his debt while supporting the Law Center's efforts in attracting and retaining outstanding faculty.

The endowed merit scholarship established by Robins will be awarded to the top student in their class, with Robins himself being the valedictorian of his class. This scholarship will not only provide financial support for deserving students but also serve as a testament to Robins' commitment to giving back to his alma mater.

Carrie Anna Criado, UH Law Center Assistant Dean of Communications and Marketing, can be contacted for further information on this donation. With this generous contribution from Ron Robins, the University of Houston Law Center continues to strive towards excellence in legal education and producing successful graduates who make a positive impact in their fields.
