AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 6, 2024 ~ According to a recent study by Upgraded Points, travelers looking to save money and avoid crowded terminals should consider flying during non-peak times. The study analyzed data from 50 of the busiest airports in the country to determine which ones are best equipped for early-morning and late-night flights.

Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief at Upgraded Points, explains that flying early in the morning or late at night can not only save money but also reduce stress. However, this is only possible if travelers know which airports are best for these types of flights.

The study looked at various factors such as the percentage of flights departing before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m., delay rates for these flights, average departure delay time, and the availability of coffee and alcohol at each airport.

For early-morning flyers, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) was found to be the best option with 38.5% of its flights departing before 8 a.m. and a low delay rate of 13.9%. Kansas City International Airport (MCI) also ranked high with 39% of its flights departing before 8 a.m. and having one coffee shop per million passengers, making it the third-highest in the study. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) was also noted for its low delay rate of 12.4% and availability of coffee shops.

On the other hand, Miami International Airport (MIA) was found to be the worst airport for early-morning flights with a high delay rate of 31.6% and an average delay time of seven minutes. Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) had a low percentage of early-morning flights at only 9.4%, along with limited options for coffee shops at only 0.33 per million passengers. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), despite having the lowest percentage of early-morning flights at 4.7%, also had a low average delay time of six minutes.

For late-night flyers, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) was once again ranked as the best airport with 21.7% of its flights departing after 8 p.m. and an average delay time of eight minutes. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) also ranked high with 22% and 19.6% of their flights departing after 8 p.m., respectively, and availability of alcohol at DTW and coffee shops at SLC.

The worst airports for late-night flights were found to be Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), San Antonio International Airport (SAT), and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). These airports had a low percentage of late-night flights, high delay rates, and long average delay times.
