HOUSTON, Sept. 25, 2024 ~ Houston, TX - Whitestone Development, Inc. and Empower Community Development Corporation, Inc. have announced their latest residential new construction community, Berry Square. This partnership marks the first time a Houston builder has equipped its residential communities with whole-home generators, aligning with their vision to create sustainable homes for all.
Located in the 3rd Ward area, Berry Square is the newest development from Whitestone Development, Inc. and offers a unique feature that sets it apart from other communities - every home comes equipped with an EcoFlow Generator System. This system is capable of powering homes for up to three days during outages and can be upgraded over time to run completely independent of the power grid if desired.
The idea for this innovative feature came about during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 when Houston experienced a city-wide blackout that also affected the entire state of Texas. This was only the second time in history that Houston had experienced a complete blackout since Hurricane Alicia in 1983. Millions of residents were left without power and essential utilities, highlighting the need for reliable power solutions.

In response to this growing need, Whitestone Development, Inc. and Empower CDC partnered with Kimberly Lane Properties (KLPTX) to incorporate the EcoFlow generator systems into each home in Berry Square. This not only provides sustainability for residents but also offers peace of mind for vulnerable elderly residents who may be more susceptible to power outages.
The vision of Empower CDC and Whitestone Development, Inc. is to create sustainable and inclusive communities that provide quality housing for all. This commitment is evident not only in their residential construction but also in their expansion of supportive services such as senior home restoration initiatives, financial literacy programs, food pantries, and whole-home generator programs for seniors.
In addition to Berry Square, Whitestone Development, Inc. and Empower CDC have upcoming projects including Sunbury Homes and Settagast Homes. The Sunbury Homes project, currently under construction, consists of nine single-family detached units with homes priced from the $280,000s. These homes are expected to be completed by early November 2024 and will be marketed by Kimberly Lane Properties.
With their focus on creating sustainable and inclusive communities, Whitestone Development, Inc. and Empower CDC are also pursuing multifamily projects through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program to further advance affordable housing initiatives.
Berry Square is a testament to the commitment of Whitestone Development, Inc. and Empower CDC to provide reliable and sustainable housing for all residents in Houston. With their innovative approach and dedication to their vision, they are setting a new standard for residential communities in the city.
