MIRA Safety's new free educational chemical spill simulator illustrates how an industrial release could affect air and water.
AUSTIN, Texas - Txylo -- MIRA Safety, an Austin, Texas-based maker of CBRN protective equipment, today announced the launch of its free Industrial Disaster Simulator, an interactive educational chemical spill simulator that illustrates how an industrial or tanker chemical release might affect the air and nearby waterways. The launch follows this week's chemical release in Toledo, Ohio, and the first available scenario covers the Toledo area. Scenarios for additional states are in development.
According to the Associated Press, a ruptured tank at a chemical trucking facility in Toledo began leaking glycidyl methacrylate on the night of Oct.20, sending a white plume into the air for more than 14 hours. Nearly 1,000 residents were evacuated, and more than 50,000 people across a three-mile radius were advised to shelter in place until the next evening.

"For years, MIRA Safety has worked to bring professional-grade protective equipment to civilians. The next level is awareness," said Tanya Mironova, CTO of MIRA Safety. "We are approaching emergency preparedness from a technology point of view, turning ideas into tools anyone can use, and listening to what people on the ground need. The Industrial Disaster Simulator helps people picture what a chemical emergency near their home could look like, so they can understand why officials issue evacuation and shelter-in-place orders and start thinking about a plan."
Users can choose from four incident types (facility leak, storage spill, rail tanker leak or derailment), select a material, set wind speed from 1.5 to 20 m/s and follow illustrative air and river scenarios on a timeline from five minutes to one week. The simulator is free with no account required, scenarios can be shared by link and results can be downloaded. A free 10-page PDF guide walks users through each step.
The tool is designed for education and general awareness only. During an active incident, residents should follow official emergency alerts and instructions from local authorities.

"Our mission goes beyond products," said Roman Zrazhevskiy, Founder and CEO of MIRA Safety. "Education is the first layer of protection, and tools like this help bring that awareness to people around the world."
The simulator joins MIRA Safety's free Nuclear Blast, Biological and Wildfire Simulators. MIRA Safety also offers a full line of gas masks and filters for households and organizations building a preparedness plan.
